The Tanjore temple is very famous temple in the Thanjai area. This temple stands for many years and not build recently. Thanjai Periya Kovil means big temple in Tamil language and it was one of the tallest temple when it was build. Its English name is Brihadeshwara Temple.

It was build by the king named Raja Raja Chola who ruled the parts of present day India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Bangladesh. He had sailed in the ocean to capture places and had them under his control.

The temple is made for the Lord Shiva and the age of the temple is more than 1000 years old. There are more than 60,000 tons of granite is being used to build such a huge structure. There are many paintings on the temple walls which can be still seen today.

The Maha Shivaratiri is the most famous festival of the temple and thousands of people gather at the temple during that day every year. The place is being connected swell with the bus and train service for the tourists to reach the location.
